Here at Biggin Hill Memorial Museum we tell the story of Britain’s most famous fighter station through the personal experiences of those who served there, and the community that supported them.

The museum is situated on the same site as St George’s RAF Chapel of Remembrance, built in 1951 to preserve the legacy of those who served and died at Biggin Hill during the Second World War. The museum safeguards the future of this important building.

The David Lean Cinema is a small cinema established in Croydon, London. It is accessed from the Croydon Clocktower arts complex on Katharine Street.

The cinema was established in the 1990s, to honour the director David Lean, who was born in the town. It was formed as a small, intimate, art house-style cinema to showcase the best of British film and World cinema as well as classic re-releases and recent favourites. It was established in a part of the 19th century Town Hall which had previously been used as a local studies library.

GIN & GOLF
Yes, that’s right – Gin and Golf can go hand in hand – just not at the same time! In 2021, Slingsby Gin launched their own Golf Academy and Celebrity Challenge aimed to inspire and encourage more females to take up the sport. In 2022 another 4 celebrities entered the Slingsby Golf Academy:

You can see their progress on YouTube Slingsby Golf Academy (S2 E1). Now we can’t all be celebrities and get invited to join the Slingsby Golf Academy but you can give golf a go and have just as much fun (and gin or other beverages) at Addington Palace Golf Club Academy (Gravel Hill, Croydon).

We are running free taster sessions for complete beginners and returning golfers starting in March 2024 followed by an opportunity to sign up for a 6-lesson introductory course with our Golf Pro.

At present we have 20 ladies progressing through our Academy, enjoying fun competitions, social events, 15 x 1:1 lessons with our excellent Golf Professionals as well as regular opportunities to get out on the course with others.

Here’s what some of our Academy ladies say:
Julie: “I was never interested in golf, watching or playing. A friend “coerced” me into having a taster with the Pro at APGC, I loved it! I signed up to the APGC Academy and have been out in all weathers – much to the surprise of my husband! I’ve made a number of new friends; taken part in a golf away day, fun competitions, quiz nights and more. Giving golf a go has been one of the best decisions I’ve made!”

Charlotte: “I was gently persuaded to attend a taster session at APGC by a friend. With little faith in my hand-eye co-ordination I was particularly nervous, however, there wasn’t any need as I was made very welcome and found I could hit a ball! After attending a six-week course at APGC I thought I’d give the APGC Academy a go for a year and 18 months on, I’m still here really enjoying it.”

Rachel: “I was interested in learning golf but not really getting anywhere until I joined the APGC Academy. Forget golf clubs having the image of being “stuffy”, everyone was so friendly, approachable and made me feel at ease.

I can already feel how much I have improved after six months in the Academy. The 1:1 training with the Pros plus the support from the ladies running the Academy has helped me to both improve my golf and feel part of the club. Best thing I have done!

The Spring Park Shirley Bowling Club at Shirley Church Recreation Ground is planning for the 2024 season and the future!

If one of your goals for 2024 is to be more active here is something for you to seriously think about …. Signing up to try Lawn Bowls at Spring Park Shirley Bowling Club.

But that’s for old people!!” I hear you cry. And I’d reply “Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

This humble game, played May – Sept, is very capable of having a positive effect on your co-ordination, core strength and flexibility as well as your mental wellbeing.

Bowls is a sport for everybody – it takes seconds to learn, but a lifetime to master – as shown in…

THE DIARY OF A NEW BOWLER
“Day 1 – Visited the Spring Park Shirley Bowls Club today with my husband for a taster session. We were welcomed, assigned a coach each and after some basic coaching my bowl was stopping relatively near the Jack (the small white target). We stopped for tea and the other members came to chat with us. Just when I thought it was over a challenge was issued – I was to play against my husband. My bowls were nearer the Jack than when I started, but nowhere near in comparison to my husbands! He seemed to step forward and release the bowl like a swan nudging it’s offspring ahead in the water, the bowl glided across the green and came to rest much nearer the Jack than mine. There was much banter over dinner. This game is not as easy as it first appears.”

“1 Month in – Visiting a couple of times a week over the last month and receiving more coaching, my husband and I are hooked. My husband is now settled into his bowling stride. He makes the delivery of his bowl look effortless whilst my bowls continue to visit all areas of the rink I am playing on as well as those I am not. Despite the challenges, my teammates laugh with me and continue to offer never ending support. This game is addictive and so enjoyable, why did I not take it up earlier? Oh yes, I remember now, I thought it was just for old people – how wrong I was!”

“April 2023 (1 year later) – We’ve decided to enter a number of club competitions this year and are excited to challenge ourselves against some of the club’s top players. We’re also looking forward to joining some of the away days, visiting some coastal bowls clubs (Herne Bay and Eastbourne) and pitching our wits against their teams.”
